I’m not sure why I haven’t read a Young Adult (YA) book as an adult. The rest of the book is very fast paced, action packed read, burning the midnight oil sort of book. I know they say don’t judge a book by its cover but… this is a badass cover with a badass protagonist to match! The beginning is a bit on the lower side, hang in there the author is just laying down the groundwork. Bree is determined there was more to her mother’s death than the officials had led on and promises she will do whatever it takes to find out the truth behind her mother’s death. Intrigued by this new ability, she starts digging around for more information about her new powers, the magic involved in her mother’s death, and this seemingly unnoticed magical society cohabitating at the university among onceborns.

Then a teenage mage tries to erase her memories of the demon attack using mesmers but somehow Bree has the power to resist mesmers. On their first night out, Bree witnesses a magical demon attack and later discovers there is a whole secret society that none of the other non-magical students, Onceborn, seem to know about.īree discovers these magic users called Legendborn, descendants of King Arthur and his knights, who trigger the memory of the night her mother died in the hospital with added new magical elements that weren’t there before. Three months later, Bree starts her first day at the UNC-Chapel Hill’s Early College Program with her best friend Alice.
