In their halls, drowsy fauns danced together with sadistic princesses and crowned sphinxes, the perfumes of the flowers of evil could be smelled with opium and the green of absinthe was mixed up with oriental emeralds. These pagan apostles raised their voices from the varnished interiors covered in cameos, preaching the fin de siècle sensitivities: parnassianists, symbolists, dandies, decadents, aesthetes, femme fatales… all of them praised an antiquity that was older than churches and laws, hedonism that went further than pleasure and this cracked reality whence to understand a different reality, invisible and Dionysian. Some artists who suspected this change built up their fair, holy refuges in artistic excess as stronghold against the ultimate disaster. Old empires extended their covetous tentacles unknowingly, subdued by novelty in machinery and sheltered in aged academicism, that the world they pretended to control was soon to be crushed under the Great War. Derelict locations where nature is recovering its space again and women inspired by the works of the aesthetes, symbolists, decadents and all themes of the 'fin de siècle' create these scenes that work as an evasion from the modern world. Taking these artistic movements as reference the project aims to explore the aesthetics of these movements as well as the concept of decadence as a way of escapism and dreaming. 'Dreamers of Decadence' is the title of a book written by Philippe Jullian on the decadent and symbolist movement.
